Singapore National Institute Of Education Selects Advanced
Internet Technology
To Facilitate Learning Programs
Desktop Videoconferencing Project Demonstrated at Learning Metropolis
Exhibition in Singapore Using CUseeMe and MeetingPoint Software
NASHUA, New Hampshire - CUseeMe Networks (NASDAQ: CUSM), the leading provider of voice and
visual communications solutions for the Internet, and Information Resource
Management, master distributor for CUseeMe Networks in Singapore, announced that
the Singapore National Institute of Education (NIE) is using CUseeMe and
MeetingPoint advanced Internet communications software for its education
programs. The NIE's use of voice and visual communications technology from
CUseeMe Networks was demonstrated at the recent Learning Metropolis Exhibition
in Singapore.
Schools
across Singapore participated in the exhibition with live video in a hands-on
demonstration of multipoint desktop videoconferencing (MDVC). During the live
demonstration, NIE researchers chaired MDVC conferences with participants in
ten of the project schools across the region. The conference was projected on a
large screen so visitors could experience the full effect of the online
collaboration. The exhibition, which was organized by the Singapore Ministry of
Education, attracted large numbers of students, parents and education leaders.
A number of corporate CEOs also observed the project and looked at ways for
using the technology in their own organizations.
The
Singapore MDVC project is a research project of the NIE. It was launched
officially in May 1999 and is funded by the Singapore Ministry of Education.
Researchers have taken advantage of the Singapore ONE broadband ATM network and
ADSL telephone lines provided by SingTel Magix to link up trainee teachers and senior
teachers in the eighteen participating schools with researchers at the NIE.
Using CUseeMe client software and MeetingPoint server software, the researchers
have set up secure, password-protected videochat rooms where participants can
share professional and educational content. Trainee teachers have for the first
time been able to see and discuss examples of their teaching with each other
virtually in real-time.
MDVC
conferences are held regularly, using the CUseeMe Networks software solution.
Each conference group is made up of four or five participants from different
schools across the island and one researcher at the NIE. The conference members
see and hear each other in real-time, and share ideas, experiences and
materials on aspects of their teaching. For example, if a trainee teacher has a
problem with classroom management, he or she is able to present and discuss the
episode with four or five other trainees to share experiences and insights.
